Leslie Saxon West retired a few weeks ago after 35 years at Mendocino College. I interviewed her at the beginning of her last semester, and she told me about how Isadora Duncan freed American women from restrictive dancing costumes. Then she talked about her trips to the Arctic, where she learned about the masks the people of the First Nations still use in dancing ceremonies. Any time I asked her for clarification–while preparing an article about an art exhibit she curated or the names of the dancers in a piece I was writing about, she responded with all the information I needed, plus links to publications that enriched the knowledge I’d already gathered. She is a first-rate teacher, never pedantic but always ready to share.  It’s been a privilege to learn from her.
