Julia Markus, author of “Lady Byron and her Daughters,” is a storyteller and a scholar. Neither of these cancels the other out as she takes us through the celebrity gossip of  Regency-era England through the rigors of social life in the Victorian period.

Lady Lovelace, the daughter of Lord and Lady Byron, has become a steam punk icon for her work on the “Analytical Engine.” And Medora Leigh, Lord Byron’s daughter with his half-sister, remains an object of scandal almost two hundred years after her death. But the main character in this biography is Lady Byron. She was married to an abusive genius for a year, but spent the majority of her life in philanthropic and academic pursuits. Julia explores the well-known pattern of domestic abuse and explains the early 19th century legal strategy Lady Byron used to extract herself from it. But mostly, in this book dedicated “To all those women, young or old, rich or poor, who know what it takes to make a new life for themselves,” she talks about Lady Byron’s life, post-love, and what it took to make it such a rich one.
