Last winter, I talked with Elizabeth Tallent about her new short story collection, “Mendocino Fire.” Sometimes it’s hard to read a whole volume of short stories, because authors get really good at developing a certain kind of emotional impact, which can be a little like getting punched exactly the same way, over and over again.

That’s not what happened here. Every story was as emotionally varied as a human being, from the beleagured son of a fisherman to the high-strung feminist scholar to the tree-sitting character Finn, who is the heroic heart of the book.

When I finished reading, I had the restless feeling I get when I finish something that is so good, I can’t face the possibility of reading something that’s not as good as what I just read. Only Henry James can focus in on emotional states like this, enlarge them and sharpen them at the same time, so states of being that might have gone unnoticed become living organisms, with methods of propulsion and rhythms never suspected.

Plus, Elizabeth has a beautiful speaking voice.
