Sarah Reith is pleased to kick off her new series, “Women in American History,” with Dr. Ajuan Mance, a 19th century literary historian specializing in African-American urban writers. In addition to articles for such publications as “Callaloo” and “The Journal of African-American Studies,” Dr. Mance is the author of two books: Inventing Black Women: African-American Women Writers and Self-Representation, 1877-2000, from the University of Tennessee Press, 2007; and Proud Legacy: the Colored Schools of Malvern, Arkansas and the Community that Made Them, from the Henson-Benson Foundation, 2013. Her blog, “Black on Campus,” is a mix of history and current events about Black people in academics, and her online sketchbook, “1001 Black Men,” lends itself as readily to academic analysis as simple enjoyment. In this episode of Women’s Voices, Sarah and Ajuan will talk mainly about the latter’s upcoming book, Before There was Harlem: an Anthology of African-American Literature From the Long 19th Century; which will be issued by the University of Tennesssee Press in early 2016. Dr. Mance is a professor in the English department at Mills College.
