Sarah Reith is proud to share her conversation with one of the foremost women's activists in Afghanistan today. Dr. Sakena Yacoobi has been involved in humanitarian work since 1982, when she co-founded Creating Hope International, a non-profit devoted to supporting grassroots organizations around the world. She founded the Afghan Institute of Learning in 1995 to serve the Afghan refugee community in Pakistan. She smuggled books into Taliban-controlled territories, where AIL centers continued operations. Today, her organization serves 11 provinces in Afghanistan and provides health services as well as education in a wide variety of subjects, from basic literacy and sewing skills to foreign languages and computers.
