Robert McChesney is the Gutgsell Endowed Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne.  His work focuses on the history and political economy of communication, emphasizing the role media play in democratic and capitalist societies. He has a particular interest in the state of journalism and the relationship of media systems and structures to effective self-governance. He is the co-founder of Free Press, a national media reform organization. From 2002–2012 he hosted the weekly radio program, “Media Matters”.

His work has been professionally translated into 31 languages. In 2001 Adbusters Magazine named him one of the “Nine Pioneers of Mental Environmentalism.” Utne Reader  listed him as one of their "50 visionaries who are changing the world". Conservative advocate David Horowitz included Robert McChesney in his book The Professors: The 101 Most Dangerous Academics in America.  Some of his books are The Endless Crisis: How Monopoly-Finance Capital Produces Stagnation and Upheaval from the USA to ChinaDigital Disconnect: How Capitalism is Turning the Internet Against DemocracyDollarocracy: How the Money-and-Media-Election Complex is Destroying America., and most recently, Blowing the Roof Off the Twenty-First Century: Media, Politics, and the Struggle for Post-Capitalist Democracy.
