A strong low pressure system is causing HEAVY RAIN today and tonight causing flooding and mudslides all over Northwest California. The heaviest rain will come to an end this evening, first in the north, and then ending in the south. It's a strong tropical moisture tap, otherwise referred to as an atmospheric river. 2-6” inches of rain expected in our region, flooding low lying areas. In fact the Flood Advisory area runs from Pt. Arena all the way to the northern California border. There are flood warnings for our local rivers, peaking overnight into morning. The GUALALA RIVER gauge is working fine, but the GARCIA RIVER gauge is currently offline. The NAVARRO RIVER floods the highway at 23 feet and private property at 30 feet. Snow levels are at 7,000'.

Flood Watch until January 18, 04:00am

High Surf Advisory until January 18, 12:00a

LATE TONIGHT INTO TOMORROW MORNING ANOTHER BRIEF BREAK IN THE RAIN'S EXPECTED. WINDS WILL BE LIGHT, and THERE MAY BE SOME CLEARING AT THE COAST...ALTHOUGH INLAND AREAS WILL LIKELY CLOUD UP DUE TO THE RECENT RAIN.

Tomorrow afternoon the next system starts to move into Del Norte County. Tomorrow night into Tuesday, this system will bring another shot of rain and wind to the region, with most of the rain expected to hit Mendocino County. Tuesday evening we may see some relief. Wednesday night we expect another system to come through, perhaps stalling over us for up to 24 hours. But according to the National Weather Service, most of these systems have ended up moving over us more quickly than expected. More systems expected Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with some drier periods in between.

On the seas, a large swell is bringing us big waves. Winds should decrease after the rain ends tonight. The large westerly swell will be creating big waves in response to the winds. ROADS: 101 NORTH OF Hopland, near Jaxon Keys Winery, there have been a series of rock slides. Caltrans keeps clearing the highway, and are keeping a close eye on this areas. State Route 1 at Mountain View Rd is blocked by a tree. Up in Trinity County Hwy 299 is closed for the indefinite future. A slide near Big Bar has blocked all lanes, so you need to seek an alternate route if you wanted to go up to the Eureka area to take 299 east toward Redding. Highway 101 was closed by Loleta this morning due to a tree and associated mud and debris slides, but that's been cleared. There was also an earthquake today off the coast 70 km WSW of Ferndale.
