In this edition of Forthright Radio, 2 professors discuss the history and very thorny issues surrounding population growth policy & immigration from very different perspectives.

Philip Cafaro is a professor of philosophy at Colorado State University at Fort Collins.  His main research centers on environmental ethics, consumption and population issues, and wild lands preservation.  He is the author of Thoreau's Living Ethics:  Walden and the Pursuit of Virtue, and he is co-editor of the forthcoming anthology, LIFE ON THE BRINK:  ENVIRONMENTALISTS CONFRONT OVERPOPULATION, both published by University of Georgia Press.  Philip Cafaro is a faculty member of Colorado State University's School of Global Ecological Sustainability, president elect of The International Society for Environmental Ethics, and president of the Board of Directors of Progressives for Immigration Reform. 
Derek Hoff is a professor of history at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. He specializes in the history of American politics and public policy, economic and business history, and the history of demographic ideas and debates. He grew up in Washington, D.C., received his B.A. from Carleton College, and then worked in advertising for a few years. He earned his M.A. in History from the University of Oregon, and his Ph.D. in History from from the University of Virginia. His first book is The State and the Stork: The Population Debate and Policymaking in United States History, published by the University of Chicago Press.

The 2017 MCPB Board Election

 The KZYX&Z Board of directors has 3 seats open for election 2017: District 3—Willits/Laytonvile/Covelo; District 4—the coast; and an at-large seat for Mendocino or contiguous county residents.

To run for the Board you must be a station member; be able to carry out the responsibilities of a board member as described on the elections web page, and submit an application by 30 January.  The application is available online or from the station. Submit it with your ballot statement by e-mail, by snail mail, or in person at the Philo studio.

To vote in the election you must be a paid-up member as of 31 December 2016. (Note: 31 December is a Saturday: if you wish to join by phoning the station—707 895-2324—please call before close of business, Friday, 30 December.)--Membership start at $25/year (simple living), $50 (regular membership), and on up through monthly (sustaining memberships) in whatever generous amounts you can afford.
