Sven Beckert is Laird Bell Professor of History at Harvard University. His research centers on the history of the United States in the nineteenth century, with a particular emphasis on the history of capitalism, including its economic, social, political and transnational dimensions.
Professor Beckert’s publications have focused on the history of economic elites, on labor, on democracy, and the global history of capitalism.  He is co-chair of the Program on the Study of Capitalism, as well as the Weatherhead Initiative on Global History, both at Harvard.  His book, EMPIRE OF COTTON: A GLOBAL HISTORY is the winner of the Bancroft Prize & 1 of 3 finalists for the Pulitzer Prize, as well as the  Cundill Prize.
