To hear this archive edition of Forthright Radio with Ben Hedin, originally broadcast on July 1, 2015, click on this link.

Benjamin Hedin has taught at Long Island University and the New School as well as New York University.  His fiction, essays and interviews have been published in The New Yorker, Slate, The Nation and Chicago Tribune, as well as prestigious small presses such as the Georgia Review.  Benjamin Hedin edited STUDIO A: THE BOB DYLAN READER.  He is the producer and author of the forthcoming documentary, THE BLUES HOUSE, which tells the story of the search for two forgotten blues singers, carried out in Mississippi in June of 1964, during some of the most violent days of the civil rights movement..  His latest book, published by City Lights Book, which is the focus of our show today is IN SEARCH OF THE MOVEMENT: THE STRUGGLE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS THEN AND NOW.
Just before this interview, the massacre of the 9 Bible studiers at the Mother Emanuel African Methodist Church in Charleston, S.C. had just occurred.  The alleged assassin,  stated that he was trying to start a race war. The confederate battle flag flew at full mast, while the US & State flags were lowered to half mast, as Pastor & state senator, Clementa Pinckney was lying in state in the state capitol.  Bree Newsome climbed the flag pole taking it down, "in the name of God".  A good time to review the real history IN SEARCH OF THE MOVEMENT: THE STRUGGLE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS THEN AND NOW.
One of the people interviewed the book, Dr. William Barber, president of the North Carolina NAACP, and one of the leaders of Moral Mondays, said of the alleged shooter, THE PERPETRATOR HAS BEEN ARRESTED, BUT THE KILLER IS STILL ALIVE.  It never seems to end, which actually is one of the conclusions of Ben Hedin’s book.  He quotes Veteran civil rights activist, Ben Zellner, who said, "We have reached the promised land, because we now know the Promised Land is the struggle itself."
